The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom's hospital bills. My baby brother's tuition. My tuition. Rent. Electricity. All of it on my shoulders. And I had just lost my job. There was no hope, no money in my account, no work to be found. And then, just when I thought all hope was lost, I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of ten thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just "VRI Inc.," and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing…except a single word, on the notes line: "You." Just those three letters.
If you receive a mysterious check, for enough money to erase all your worries, would you cash it? I did.
The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: "belong."
A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. "To me."
The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom's hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you're desperate? You don't. I didn't.
And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: "It's time to pay your debt."
Would you have gotten in? I did. It turns out $120,000 doesn't come free. <!--more-->
This book was a great surprise for me. I have read maybe two books by Jasinda Wilder, but I must admit, she received a fan for life when she introduced me to Alpha! This story inspired so many emotions from me, complete with wanting to throw my Kindle across the room, while at the same time cheering for the very people making me want to throw said Kindle.
Kyrie is a woman that can't seem to get herself together to save her life. She comes across as naive, but I can see past that to the deeper things she has going on inside of herself. Yes, sometimes you just want to shake her, but she is like the rest of the women in the world and her hesitance is understandable. I liked the fact that we got to know a little bit about her before she was "collected" to repay her debt. As much as I did not want this book to be predictable, sometimes it was - but it was not an offsetting predictable!
Roth is something else in his own right. He is mysterious, completely Alpha, knows what he wants, how to get it and how to make just about everything under the sun go the way he wants it to. He has his sights set on Kyrie and will stop at nothing to obtain her - even if it means "buying" her affection with those mysterious checks. The chemistry between the two and the connection was heartwarming. My heart broke for "Valentine" over and over again, while at the same time wanting to shake him because some of that heartbreak could have been avoided had he not been.. HIM.
The story was an effortless flow that kept me from turning page after page to see what was going to happen next. I also LOVED Harris. Yes, I believe this story would have been nothing without him! Roth has a past that he would love to leave there.. in the past. Yet the one thing he wishes he could undo and completely forget, could be the very thing that causes him to lose the one thing in this world he has ever wanted with a need he has never felt before.. Kyrie.
Jasinda Wilder delivers a book full of promise, premise and enough emotions to fill a bucket. I loved every single second of it. I recommend this book to all Wilder fans, as well as devoted fans of romance in general. I feel you will not be disappointed.
